Optimist

Introduction

So I’ve decided to set up this blog for anyone who might like to read my ramblings about a number of issues. Number one on that list is my memoir which was published in October 2021 and which I will be putting photos and reviews of in the near future.

Also on my to-do list (on which there a lot of entries!) is to finish a first draft of my Queer/Science Fiction novel. As of 8th September 2024 it’s about 55,000 words and if my memoir is anything to go by I’ll have to cut it down considerably!

However this site will also, in the future, give me the opportunity to write about one of my life-long loves – science fiction in general and especially sf fandom. I have had an interest in the genre since my mother brought me home a book by one of the Big Three, Isaac Asimov and I became enthralled with both his stories and equally his descriptions of growing up in New York in the 1930s. How ironic it is that now I am once again looking across the pond to that great city where my daughter works in a start-up company. (Update: she’s now in Los Angeles!)

For twenty-five years, all through my teenage years and beyond, science fiction was the bedrock of my life. Through it I found the love of my life, my best friend, a purpose. Yet it also distracted me from the main topic of the memoir: my transition from male to female and the joy and heartbreak that has brought both me and those around me.

So it is, at least initially, the draft of the memoir that will form the majority of this blog and I look forward to reading your comments as I post extracts from it.
