Science Fiction

Irish Science Fiction Fandom

On a short walk recently Helen and I talked about our long involvement in Irish science fiction fandom – in my case from 1976 – and how important it is to document that history. So my next project, following my memoir, will be a work looking back over the twenty years from 1976 to the second Timewarp convention in 1995. I actually started this about 15 years ago but the scale of the task deterred me.

A vast selection of publications which had resided in our attic for far too long were scanned by Joe Siclari and his lovely wife Edie, and friends Mark Olsen and others, of FANAC at the recent Dublin World SF Convention. These are available at his site www.FANAC.org. But the publications need context and explaining and this would be another project that I would thoroughly enjoy. Watch this space.

Ive had complaints that I haven’t put much of anything about science fiction so far. Bearing in mind that I have a deadline of two weeks for the memoir, and that I wanted to reorganise this site, and that I’m also working on Under the Rainbow (for all your wellbeing, diversity, inclusion and counselling!) you will please forgive me.

But just to get going on the fan history here’s a few photos from Worldcon ’79 in Brighton. See if you can see spotty, teenage me. I’ll add to the gallery as time allows. Sorry for the quality, they ARE from the dark ages…
